When to visit
Is it worth going to Phuket in November?
Updated
Short answer
Yes, November is one of the better-value months for Phuket. The Andaman dry season begins in November, bringing clear skies and calm seas, while prices haven't yet reached the December-January peak. The Similan Islands reopen around mid-November. Early November can still have residual monsoon rain; from mid-November onward, conditions are typically reliable.
November is actually the month I'd tell most people to consider for Phuket. The weather is essentially the same as December or January, the prices are lower, and the crowds are thinner.
The weather transition
The Andaman dry season begins in November. The southwest monsoon that ran from May through October winds down in the final weeks of October, and by the time November properly arrives, the weather pattern has shifted. Clear mornings become the norm. The Andaman Sea calms down. West coast beaches stop getting red-flag warnings.
The first week of November can still see some residual weather from October's monsoon. If you're booking early November, a small amount of rain is possible. From around November 10-15, the transition is usually complete and you can rely on dry-season conditions.
What opens in November
The Similan Islands reopen around November 15, give or take a week depending on the National Park Service's annual decision. This is important: the Similan liveaboard season is what makes Phuket a diving destination, and it restarts in November. Booking a trip in the first two weeks after opening gives you excellent conditions without December's peak-season prices and crowds.
The price and crowd situation
November is 15-25% cheaper than January for comparable Phuket accommodation. That's a real saving on a beach holiday. The beaches are busy but not at the January Patong level. Dive operators have availability. Good restaurants don't require booking weeks in advance.
This is the core argument for November over December: you get the same Andaman dry-season experience at meaningfully lower cost. By December, the Christmas-New Year crowd arrives and prices jump. November avoids that entirely.
Early vs late November
If you can pick within the month, go later. From November 15 onward, the weather is reliably good and the Similans are open. Early November is fine but carries a slightly higher rain risk. The price doesn't change much within the month; the reliability does.
The honest verdict
November is the best-value month for Phuket. Same product as January, lower price, thinner crowd. The only reason to choose December or January over November is if the specific dates force it, or if you want the full Christmas-New Year atmosphere (though whether Patong in peak Christmas crowd is an experience you want is a separate question).
