When to visit
Is March too hot in Phuket?
Updated
Short answer
March is hot in Phuket (33-35°C) but not worse than the climate at most hot beach destinations at their peak. The sea is still calm and the breeze on the beach helps. Most people find March manageable for a beach holiday. April is when the heat starts becoming genuinely uncomfortable for some visitors, with rising humidity layered on top of the temperature.
March heat in Phuket is the kind of heat most people visiting a tropical beach destination expect and have accounted for. It's not a surprise if you've spent any time in the Mediterranean, Southeast Asia, or the Caribbean in summer.
What the temperature actually feels like
Daily highs are around 33-35°C in March. The Andaman coast is still dry at this point, which means the heat is real but not oppressive in the way that high humidity makes it in August. The sea temperature sits at 28-29°C, and the breeze coming off the water genuinely moderates how the beach feels. Sitting on the sand in March at 10am is hot; sitting in the shade at the same beach at 10am is fine.
The part that catches people is midday. Between about 11am and 2pm the sun is directly overhead and there's no argument with the heat. This is true in March, April, May, June, and every other month in Thailand. Go to a beach club, a restaurant, or a swimming pool during that window. Not a temple.
March versus April
March is meaningfully different from April. By April, the monsoon is approaching and humidity starts climbing on top of the temperature. April in Phuket can feel considerably heavier than March even if the thermometer reads the same. March is the last genuinely comfortable month for walking around and being active outdoors in Phuket. April pushes it.
Practical adjustments
The standard approach: beach or outdoor activities in the morning (7am-11am is ideal), lunch and a slow afternoon indoors or by the pool, late afternoon and evening for more outdoor time. This is how most experienced travellers and all local residents approach March and April.
Sunscreen matters more in March than any colder month. SPF 50 or above, reapplied. The UV index at this latitude in March is genuinely high.
Water activities
Diving and snorkelling are unaffected by air temperature. The Similan Islands are still open in March, sea conditions are good, and the water is warm. If the plan is beach-and-water-activities rather than walking-and-exploring, the March heat is almost irrelevant because you'll be in the water anyway.
The honest answer
March is not too hot for a beach trip to Phuket. It's too hot for extended midday exploration on foot, which you shouldn't be doing in Thailand regardless of month. Manage the midday hours and the rest works fine.
