Is May ok to travel in Thailand?

Updated

Short answer

May is fine to travel in Thailand with adjusted expectations. The Andaman coast (Phuket, Krabi) is getting wet, so beach holidays there are unpredictable. The Gulf islands (Samui, Koh Tao) are in good shape. Bangkok works with the usual rainy-season planning. The north is improving as the rains clear the burning season smoke. Logistics, transport, and infrastructure are all normal.

The logistics of travelling in May are exactly the same as any other month. Domestic flights run, buses and trains run, hotels are open, restaurants are open. The question is whether the weather matches your plan.

What changes in May

On the Andaman coast, some boat services to smaller islands become weather-dependent. Ferries to Phi Phi from Phuket still run but may have cancellations on rough days. The Similan Islands close around mid-May, so liveaboard diving there is over. A few dive operators reduce their schedules. Island-hopping day trips become more unpredictable.

In Bangkok, flash flooding is possible in low-lying streets during heavy afternoon downpours. This affects specific areas: Pratunam, Saphan Kwai, and parts of Huai Khwang. Staying near BTS or MRT stations means the flooding doesn't affect you much in practice, since the elevated transit network runs regardless.

What doesn't change in May

Everything cultural and urban works the same way in May as in January. Bangkok's temples, markets, food scene, shopping, and nightlife don't have a rainy season. Chiang Mai's cooking classes, temples, and restaurants are fully operational. The Gulf coast islands are open and running.

The fixed-price things in Thailand (street food, public buses, 7-Eleven, local ferries) don't have seasonal pricing. A 50-baht pad krapow doesn't change in May.

The Gulf coast as the May alternative

If the original plan involved Phuket but May weather is a concern, the swap to Koh Samui or Koh Tao is genuinely easy. Both have reliable domestic flight connections from Bangkok. May is good for both: calm seas, reasonable weather, and prices are below the February peak. Koh Tao specifically is one of the best dive months of the year.

Hotel booking

May is one of the better months to book last-minute on the Andaman coast. A hotel that was unavailable or $200+ in January has open rooms and lower rates in May. Walk-in flexibility that doesn't exist in January returns in May.
