When to visit
Why is Thailand cheaper in June?
Updated
Short answer
Thailand is cheaper in June because the Andaman monsoon is in full swing and tourist demand for Phuket and Krabi collapses. Hotels across the Andaman coast discount to fill rooms, and Bangkok and Chiang Mai track the same pattern because the overall pool of tourists visiting Thailand is smaller. June is solidly low season.
The pricing logic in June is simpler than August. In August, European school holidays inflate Andaman coast prices despite the weather. In June, no such demand spike exists, so the monsoon discount applies cleanly.
Why June specifically
May starts the monsoon discount on the Andaman coast. By June, the monsoon is fully established and the European school year is still running (most European schools finish in late June or early July). That means no family travel spike to prop up Phuket prices. No school holiday demand. The monsoon weather is there, the demand is low, and hotels respond.
June also doesn't have any major Thai festivals or holidays that drive up domestic travel demand. It's a neutral month from a calendar perspective, which means prices follow the weather pattern without interference.
What actually drops in June
Andaman coast hotels: dramatically. Phuket properties drop 50-60% from January rates. Krabi follows the same pattern.
Bangkok: 25-35% below January. This has nothing to do with Bangkok's own weather, which in June is manageable with afternoon storms. It's purely a function of the national tourist numbers being lower.
Chiang Mai: 25-30% below January. Same logic.
Gulf coast (Samui, Tao): smaller discount, around 15-20%. The weather here is still good in June, which limits how far hotels discount. They don't need to drop as far to fill rooms because there's legitimate demand.
International flights
Long-haul from Europe don't drop in June; in fact, late June and July is when European summer holiday demand starts pushing fares up. The hotel savings in June are not matched by airfare savings on European routes. Flights from Australia, Singapore, Hong Kong, and Japan do see modest drops.
The practical bottom line
June is one of the best-value months to visit Bangkok and Chiang Mai specifically: good or manageable weather, 25-35% off accommodation, and significantly fewer tourists than December or February. The Andaman coast is cheap but the weather is the price. The Gulf coast is a good June option where value and weather both work.
