Is April rainy season in Bangkok?
Updated
Short answer
April is not rainy season in Bangkok. The rainy season starts in May. April does see some afternoon showers in the second half of the month as the monsoon approaches, but nothing like the sustained rains of June-September. Bangkok in April is mostly hot, humid, and sunny, with occasional short thunderstorms mixed in.
April Bangkok is about heat, not rain. The rainy season is a month away.
The actual timeline
Bangkok's rainy season runs from May to October. April sits in the hot dry season. Monthly rainfall in April is around 70-80mm, most of which falls in a handful of short afternoon thunderstorms in the second half of the month. For comparison, August gets around 200-210mm and September gets 220mm+. April is in a completely different category.
What April rain looks like
Any rain you get in April arrives as a short, intense afternoon thunderstorm. These follow a recognisable pattern: clear morning, building cloud from noon, heavy downpour between 2pm and 5pm, clear evening. They're the beginning of what becomes the rainy season in May, but at this stage they're isolated events rather than the daily pattern you get from June onward.
The Songkran water festival falls in April (13-15 April), which means you'll be intentionally soaked by strangers before the sky gets a chance to do it. The festival rain and the weather rain are not the same thing.
What April Bangkok is actually like
The more significant issue in April Bangkok is not rain but heat. Temperatures hit 37-39°C on the hottest days, and humidity is building toward wet season. Walking between temples and streets in April midday is exhausting. Bangkok requires the same approach in April as any other hot month: morning visits, afternoon indoors, evening back out.
When to start worrying about rain
From about the third week of April onward, you'll see showers every few days. By early May, they're a near-daily feature. By June, you can count on afternoon rain most days and occasional full-day rain events. If you're sensitive to rain affecting your plans, April is still manageable; May onwards requires planning around it.
