Is Phuket too hot in April?
Updated
Short answer
April is Phuket's hottest month: 35-37°C with rising humidity as the monsoon approaches. Whether it's too hot depends on what you're doing. Lying on a beach with a cold drink in 35°C is workable; walking temples or exploring on foot for hours in the same heat is rough. The sea is still clear and calm. Most beach-goers find it manageable; active explorers will find it limiting.
The temperature question for Phuket in April is real but also depends on what you mean by "too hot for what."
The numbers
April highs in Phuket sit around 35-37°C. That's the air temperature. The sea temperature is 30°C. UV index is high. And unlike March, which is hot but dry, April brings increasing humidity as the monsoon builds offshore. The combination of 35°C and rising humidity is heavier than 35°C in dry season.
Midday in Phuket in April is genuinely uncomfortable for extended outdoor activity. This isn't alarmism; it's what the climate is. People who grow up in Phuket don't walk anywhere between noon and 3pm in April.
What works in the heat
Beach holidays function in April in a specific way. You're in the water or in the shade from about 10am to 4pm, which solves the temperature problem. Sea temperature is 30°C, the sea breeze is real, and the water cools you off. The beach in April is hot but a beach holiday is mostly about the water anyway.
Mornings before 10am are the most usable outdoor time. If you want to do anything that involves walking around, exploring markets, or visiting temples, 7am-10am is when it works. Then back to the beach or pool.
The humidity factor
This is what separates April from January, even when temperatures look similar. January Phuket at 33°C is dry and feels lighter. April Phuket at 35°C with 80% humidity feels significantly heavier. The body has to work harder to cool itself. Sweat doesn't evaporate as efficiently.
If you've experienced humid tropical summers in Bangkok, Singapore, or Miami, you'll know what April in Phuket is asking of you. If you've only experienced dry heat (Mediterranean, desert, southern Europe), April in Phuket will feel harder than you expect from the temperature number alone.
Late April and the pre-monsoon storms
From around 20 April onwards, afternoon thunderstorms start appearing. Brief, intense, and usually over within an hour. They actually provide relief from the heat when they happen. But they can disrupt afternoon boat trips or outdoor plans.
The practical answer
For a beach-focused trip, April in Phuket is manageable if you understand what it is. You're getting the Andaman dry season at its hottest and most humid point. The sea is still good, everything is still open, and prices are below January levels. If you're heat-sensitive or want to spend significant time exploring rather than lying on the beach, look at March or November instead.
