When to visit
Is it a good time to go to Thailand in February?
Updated
Short answer
February is an excellent time to visit Thailand. The Andaman coast (Phuket, Krabi) is in full dry season. The north (Chiang Mai) is at its clearest before the burning season begins in March. The Gulf coast (Samui, Tao) has fully recovered from its December rains. Prices are slightly lower than December and January, making February the best-value month in high season.
February is probably the best overall value in high season. The weather is essentially the same as January almost everywhere, and prices have come off the Christmas-New Year peak. It fills up because experienced travellers know this, but not quite as fast as January.
The Andaman coast
Phuket, Krabi, Koh Lanta, and Phi Phi are all in the middle of the Andaman dry season. February averages around 20-25mm of rain in Phuket, negligible for planning purposes. Seas are calm, visibility for diving is at its annual peak, and the Similan Islands are fully operational with liveaboards running on daily schedules.
This is the same experience as January at roughly 10-15% lower accommodation prices. The beach quality doesn't change month to month; the price does.
Chiang Mai and the north
February is the last good month in Chiang Mai before the burning season starts. From around March onwards, agricultural burning and forest fires produce significant smoke across the north. In February, the air is clean, the mountains are visible, the temperature is comfortable, around 28-32°C days with 15-20°C nights, and the northern landscape is still green from the previous year's monsoon.
If Chiang Mai or Chiang Rai or Pai is part of the plan, do it in February rather than March. The same temples, same food, same experience, but without the haze.
The Gulf coast
Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, and Koh Tao are in good shape by February. The November-December rainy season is done. February is not the Gulf's best month, that's July or August, but it's reliably fine: calm enough seas for day trips and snorkelling, reasonable dive conditions on Koh Tao, and very little rain.
Bangkok
February is one of Bangkok's most comfortable months. Temperatures sit at 28-32°C during the day, drop to around 22-24°C at night, and humidity is low. Rain is minimal. Walking between temples, markets, and river piers is genuinely comfortable. Compared to April (sweltering) or August (rainy and humid), February Bangkok is a different proposition.
The timing consideration
Chinese New Year falls in late January or February depending on the lunar calendar. It affects domestic travel and prices on specific routes and in specific cities. Bangkok's Chinatown (Yaowarat) is worth visiting during the celebrations. Book accommodation in Bangkok and Phuket early if your travel dates overlap with Chinese New Year week.
The honest verdict
February is the month I'd recommend to most people asking when to go to Thailand. Weather is excellent everywhere that matters, prices haven't fully reset from January peak, and the crowds are real but manageable. The only thing better about January is that you avoid the February school holiday spikes in some European markets. February is slightly better value. Otherwise, they're nearly identical.
