When to visit

Which part of Thailand is best to visit in February?

Updated

Short answer

The Andaman coast (Phuket, Krabi, Koh Lanta, the Similan Islands) is the strongest choice in February: perfect dry season weather, clear seas, and full boat-trip operations. The north (Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai) is at its last clean window before burning season. The Gulf coast (Samui, Tao) is fine but not at its peak. Bangkok is comfortable and worth combining with any of the above.

February is one of the only months where most of Thailand is simultaneously in good condition, which makes choosing hard. Here's where to put your time if you have to pick.

Best for beaches: the Andaman coast

Phuket, Krabi, Koh Lanta, Phi Phi, and the Similan Islands are all fully operational in February. Seas are at their calmest of the year on the Andaman side. Dive visibility on the Similans runs 20-25 metres, and liveaboards are fully booked through peak season.

The specific advantage of February over January is slight but real: accommodation prices are a few percent lower and the first-week-of-year crowd has gone home. You're still in high season, but the pressure is slightly less.

Alternatives within the Andaman: Koh Yao Noi (small island between Phuket and Krabi, almost no mass tourism), Koh Mook (near Trang, accessible by ferry from Krabi, tiny and largely local), and Koh Lipe (at the southern tip near the Malaysian border, further south but excellent conditions).

Best for culture and trekking: the north

February is the last clean month for Chiang Mai. The burning season starts in March and the air quality in the Chiang Mai valley deteriorates fast. In February, the air is clear, temperatures are comfortable at 25-30°C during the day with cooler nights, and the mountain landscape is fully visible.

Chiang Rai's White Temple (Wat Rong Khun) and Blue Temple (Wat Rong Suea Ten) are both accessible and uncrowded relative to high season. Pai, the mountain town north of Chiang Mai, is in good shape in February. Doi Inthanon, Thailand's highest peak, is at its most photogenic with clear views.

Best for city travel: Bangkok

Bangkok in February is genuinely comfortable. Around 28-32°C days, 22-24°C nights, minimal rain. The Grand Palace, Wat Pho, and Wat Arun are all accessible; go early (opening time, 8-8:30am) to beat tour group arrivals. Chatuchak Weekend Market on Saturday and Sunday is busy but operating at its usual scale. The Chao Phraya river express boats and Khlong boats are the fastest way to move between temple clusters.

If you want Bangkok food specifically, February is when the weather makes street food and outdoor markets more pleasant than August.

Where February is not the best choice

The Gulf coast (Samui, Phangan, Tao) is fine but not in its prime. February is workable, but the Gulf's real high season runs from March through September. If Gulf islands are your focus, March through May gives you better sea conditions and comparable prices.
