Is Krabi worth visiting?

Updated

Short answer

Yes, if you choose where to stay carefully. The beaches, the limestone scenery, and Railay Beach specifically are genuinely good. Book accommodation in Ao Nang, not Krabi Town.

Krabi is worth visiting. The scenery is genuinely different from other parts of Thailand: limestone karsts rising out of the sea, clear water, long empty beaches in the quieter spots. Railay Beach alone, accessible only by longtail boat because limestone cliffs cut it off from all roads, is one of the better beaches in the country.

The caveat is that "Krabi" creates confusion because it refers to both a province and a town. The town has no beach. Most people who are disappointed with Krabi made the mistake of staying in Krabi Town rather than Ao Nang, which is the actual beach hub 15 minutes from the airport. This is a very fixable mistake.

What makes it worth it

The combination of good beaches and accessible day trips is hard to match in Thailand. You can spend a morning at Railay, an afternoon snorkelling at the 4 Islands, climb limestone routes in Tonsai, or kayak through mangroves at Ao Thalane, all from the same base in Ao Nang. The Tiger Cave Temple viewpoint, 1,237 steps up, gives you the whole province from above.

The water quality on the Andaman coast in the dry season (November to April) is better than most of the Gulf coast. Snorkelling is genuinely worthwhile, not just something to do.

When it's not worth it

Visiting in the wet season (May to October) without research or flexibility. The sea gets rough, snorkelling is poor, and some boat trips are cancelled or suspended for days at a time. Krabi in November through April is a different trip from Krabi in August.
