Is October ok to go to Phuket?

Short answer
Late October is fine for Phuket; early October is still wet. The Andaman dry season transition happens through October and into November. If you're booking October travel to Phuket, aim for the 20th onward for a reasonable chance of good beach weather. Early October (before the 15th) is still monsoon territory: 200mm+ of rain expected, rough west-coast beaches, and limited boat trips.
October Phuket is not a single experience. The month splits clearly between a first half that's still monsoon and a second half that's increasingly the dry season.
Early October: still wet
The first two weeks of October in Phuket look like the tail end of the monsoon that's been running since May. Afternoon storms are still the pattern. The west coast beaches (Patong, Karon, Kata, Surin) are still rough on bad days. Some boat trips to Phi Phi and smaller islands run, but with cancellations on heavy days.
The Similan Islands don't reopen until mid-November approximately, so liveaboard diving is still off the table. Dive operators on the Andaman run limited schedules.
The weather isn't August-bad (that was worse), but it's not reliable enough for a beach-focused trip.
Late October: improving noticeably
From around October 20 onwards, Phuket's character changes. Clearer mornings become more frequent. Afternoons are less reliably stormy. The seas calm. By the final week of October, you can have stretches of several dry days in a row, though November is when the dry season properly establishes.
If your trip falls in late October, the weather is a calculated bet that often pays off. It's not January reliable, but it's not monsoon either. Many years, late October Phuket is genuinely pleasant.
How to book for October
For trips in the first half of October: look for flexible or refundable rates. The weather risk is real. Non-refundable early-October Phuket bookings are a gamble.
For trips in the second half of October: non-refundable is more reasonable, particularly after the 20th. The weather odds are better.
What to do in early October if you're already there
Phuket Old Town is excellent regardless of beach conditions. The Sino-Portuguese architecture, Lard Yai Sunday Walking Street, and the covered food markets are weather-independent. Cooking classes, spa days, and Wat Chalong can all be structured around the weather pattern (morning outdoor visits, afternoon indoor when the storms come).
The pricing situation
October Phuket is still cheap, priced at low-season rates even as the late-month weather improves. This is the representation lag: hotels haven't fully repriced for the approaching dry season yet. Late October gives you improved weather at October prices, which is a genuine value window.
