When to visit

Why is Thailand cheap in October?

Updated

Short answer

October stays cheap because neither coast has fully reliable weather, and there's no school-holiday demand spike to push prices back up. The Andaman coast (Phuket) still has a monsoon reputation even as it improves, the Gulf coast (Samui) is entering its worst period, and European schools are back in session. Hotels discount to fill rooms.

October pricing is essentially September pricing carried forward by reputation, even though the underlying weather is improving on the Andaman coast.

The reputation lag

Phuket's dry season begins properly in November. But because October is still associated with monsoon season, the tourist bookings for October reflect the whole-month reputation rather than the late-October reality. This means hotel rates in late October are lower than they should be based on the weather you actually get.

This lag benefits travellers who understand the nuance. If you book late October Phuket at October prices, you may get late October Phuket weather, which is often genuinely good.

Why the August pricing spike doesn't repeat in October

August is anomalous: European school holidays push Andaman coast prices up despite terrible weather. By October, European schools are back in session. No family travel spike. No holiday demand. The Andaman coast finally discounts properly and stays discounted.

The Gulf coast effect

Koh Samui and Koh Phangan are in their worst weather period in October. No beach tourist is choosing the Gulf side in October, which removes demand from that part of the market. Bangkok and Chiang Mai are improving, but the national tourist numbers stay lower because the beach options are limited.

What drops in October

Andaman coast: 40-60% below January. Still not as cheap as September because the market is starting to anticipate the November-December peak season, but well below high-season rates.

Bangkok: 30-40% below January. This is a genuinely good deal for a city where weather is fine by mid-October.

Gulf coast: deeply discounted due to the weather. Samui hotels that are $200 in January can be $70-80 in October.

The booking opportunity

October is a good month for the traveller who pays attention. Late October at Phuket prices, late October at Bangkok's dry-season comfort, and Chiang Mai entering its excellent November-February cool season. The prices still reflect the month's mixed reputation while the experience increasingly reflects the approaching high season.
